I can't say Im a huge Brad Pitt fan but the premise of the movie- about a man who ages backward- was intriguing. I heard good things about Benjamin Button and found myself at the theater today, trying to decide between seeing Yes Man or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I decided to see Ben Button.

This was before I knew the film ran about three hours.

Going to the movies is always a wonderful escape for me. As a little girl I dreamed up stories and imagined them as movies running through my head. I love the darkened theater, the previews and the excitement and anticipation as the music begins. I also like a big bucket of fattening, buttery popcorn but that's another story.

The movie begins...and not to give anything away if you haven't seen it, but I wish there was a class actors could take on carrying a pretend baby. The man running with the newborn baby- Baby Benjamin- looked like he just had an empty blanket in his arms. At least carry a 5lb bag of potatoes, something with a little weight, something to make the audience believe there's a baby in there. And the baby looked like E.T. That's all I'm telling you, not spoiling a thing.

Long story short, the movie was loooonnnnnggggg. I felt it dragged on and on and there were unncessary scenes, scenes that should have landed on the cutting room floor in editing. Yes, it was a decent movie, a good movie. A film that probably made people tear up. And Cate Blanchett is wonderful.

I know the film has been nominated for multiple Golden Globes and there's been early Oscar buzz but please, let's not discount the escape and humor value of a movie like The House Bunny. I'm just using this film as an example. Where are the awards for the films that make us laugh? The non-critically acclaimed movies that provide nothing more than eighty to ninety minutes of fun? I'm picky when it comes to comedic movies, its hard to make me laugh. I hate slapstick humor, not a fan of vulgarity, didn't like Superbad, StepBrothers and the like, so when a movie makes me giggle or bust a chuckle out loud, that's saying something.

27 Dresses might not win an Academy Award but I loved it. Bride Wars might not be on the list for a Golden Globe but I'll be there when it opens next weekend. What Happens in Vegas won't earn Cameron Diaz a little gold statue but I'd watch it again. People's Choice awards aside, why isn't there an awards show for those movies? Maybe I can come up with something.

In the meantime, go see Marley and Me. Or if you want to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, bring a blanket and pillow. And a large coffee.

Vacation Reading....

Happy New Year! I can't wait to see what fantastic books are published this year!

While I was away on my trip, I was able to log some major reading time. I started with Whitney Lyles novel, First Comes Love. I moved on to read the best selling book, The Shack. I read and highly recommend Ann Rule's latest true crime collection called Mortal Danger. I love her writing, the forensics, and mystery of whats going to happen. Her books are so good. And sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. I quickly zipped through that book which I bought at the airport, along with a new Shape magazine and a Self. And an Egg McMuffin.

I read James Patterson's Double Cross, Nicholas Sparks's The Choice. I had wanted to read the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time for a while. I heard mixed reviews about the novel but I really liked it. A quick and intriguing read with a main character that's quite different.

I read Maggie Marr's Hollywood Girl's Club and Secrets of the Hollywood Girl's Club- more about these books later.

Next up was Holly Shumas's Love and Other Natural Disasters. A pregnant woman discovers her husband is having an emotional affair with his coworker. The book addresses issues of trust, betrayal, love and is written by a marriage/family therapist...so she knows a thing or two about relationships. Holly delves full throttle into the range of emotions in finding out a most painful truth.

Because I ran out of books to read, my mother in law brought me to her local library, an old tiny place. I pulled a book off the shelf at random and didn't realize until I began to read that it was a Christian book. It was very cute, a fast read, a light and sweet novel called A Mile in My Flip Flops by Melody Carlson. Here's the deal- a kindergarten teacher decides to earn some quick cash by renovating a fixer upper. Everything she learned about house flipping she's learned from watching HGTV ..needless to say the character gets in over her head but don't fear, there's a happy conclusion.

I read Maggie Marr's books about Hollywood called The Hollywood Girls Club and Secrets of the Hollywood Girls Club- more about these books later.

Next up was Holly Shumas's Love and Other Natural Disasters is about a pregnant woman who discovers her husband is having an emotional affair with his coworker. The book addresses issues of trust, betrayal, love and is written by a marriage/family therapist...so she knows a thing or two about relationships.

My favorite book read over my trip was Alison Pace's novel called City Dog. The book centers around Amy, a divorced children's book author who writes about the ficticious adventures of her Westie, Carlie. Amy is offered the chance to star in a tv show alongside Carlie and that's when the plot thickens and Amy's life takes a turn. I highly recommend this book which is written in such a thoughtful, funny way by a fabulous author.

Happy Holidays!

I'm taking some time off during this busy holiday season to travel, spend time with friends and family and enjoy the last few weeks of '08! The debate was how to focus the adaptation of the second book, which deals more with giant werewolves than vampires, as well as the long depression of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), after her vampire lover (Rob Pattinson) leaves her. One issue was how to get more of teen heartthrob Pattinson into the film. (Rosenberg has figured out a device to achieve this.) But Hardwicke, burned out from her "Twilight" labors, simply wasn't willing to jam this movie with a script that still needed months of development.

"I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct 'New Moon,'" said Hardwicke. "Directing 'Twilight' has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel -- it is a great story."

You can read the entire article at Variety.com.

I wonder what they will do differently. I imagine a bigger budget will allow for a fancier film...something along the lines of the Matrix movies, perhaps?

Maria Semple, This One is Mine

The problem with discovering an author you like is that when you find out there's not another book readily available to read by said author, you have to sit on your hands and just wait until they produce another one. Maria Semple's debut novel, This One is Mine,
left me longing for another good story. I didn't even realize this until yesterday but Maria is an Emmy nominated producer who worked on such shows as Arrested Development, Mad About You and Suddenly Susan.

Here's what I wrote on my review on GoodReads.com (and if you aren't a member, you should be- its a great way to see what people are reading)-

I began this last night and read until the wee hours of the morning. It was just the type of book I was in the mood for. Set in Los Angeles, the story is about Violet and David Parry. They live a charmed life- a big house high in the hills of Hollywood, millions of dollars in their bank account, a nanny and fancy cars. But naturally all is not what it seems as Violet becomes increasingly depressed and finds solace in a low life ex drug addict named Teddy. Meanwhile, Sally- David's sister, wants to get married and live a rich and fabulous life, something like what Violet has. I love the contract between Sally and Violet, each striving for what they don't have but want. The author is brilliant at criss-crossing the lives of the characters until they are intertwined and unexpected things happen. I was sad to see this end. If you are looking for a modern story set against the backdrop of Los Angeles with tragic and quirky characters, well written and intriguing, this is your book!

Maria so kindly answered some of my questions. I was thinking about all the things I wanted to ask her while I was reading the book. And just so you know, some parts of the book had me laughing out loud. That's not easy to do. Long after I closed the book I was pondering the characters and the things they did. I'm still thinking about the story.

The characters are quirky and relatable. Is there anyone in your real life that you patterned these people after?

I knew the main stories I wanted to tell-- Violet's and Sally's-- and in serving those, I grabbed details from people I knew, but nobody in particular. A cursory reading of my bio will tell you that, like Violet, I was a TV writer who lived in Los Angeles and had a baby. Other similarities: I lived along Mulholland, am kind of compulsive about remodeling houses, am a vegetarian, am really into RIE, and at one point weighed more than Alan Iverson.

I love the way you made all the characters lives come together in unexpected ways. I thought it was rather brilliant. How did you plot or outline the novel?

First of all, thank you. Like I said, I had the skeleton of Violet's and Sally's stories before I began. And I knew how I wanted David to fit in-- that I wanted him to be dormant throughout the book, for the reader to think of him as an jerk. Then, half-way through, I wanted the reader to realize that they had him all wrong. But scene-by-scene, I was constantly surprising myself with details that I knew would have to reappear, somehow, later in the book. So the outline was a breathing, changing document, even more than the manuscript itself.

You've written for television- how different is it to write for tv versus writing a book?

I'm a freak for plot and story, which totally comes from TV. A large part of TV is "breaking stories"-- or outlining. Because in TV you only have 22 minutes to tell a story. (I fear I just dated myself. I think these days they only have 18 minutes!) So you spend a whole lot of time examining scenes and making sure they're as tight as possible. I also got became accustomed to telling a story in dialogue and facts. There isn't a lot of description in my book. Mainly because I didn't know if I had the chops to fill the book with long flowery descriptions.

The biggest and scariest difference between books and TV is that with a book, there's no one to blame but yourself! In TV, if the work isn't great, you can always hide behind the network notes or the actors or the constraints of the medium. But the book is like me handing you something and saying, "Here. Here's the best I can do."

There are bits of humorous one liners and funny scenes but its not always obvious. Did you ever worry that the reader won't "get it"?

No. And I think that was a reaction to my years in TV where the network always wants you to write down to the lowest common denominator. (I'll add that most of the great shows, like Arrested Development did no such thing and got taken off the air for it!) What I was concerned about was telling my story in the most accurate way possible. I trusted my instincts and never worried about the reader "getting" it. What I did worry about was the reader putting down the book.

What was your path to writing a novel? Was it hard to find an agent?

I always wanted to write a novel, but I thought novels were for other, smarter people to write. And then, one day, I thought, screw it, I'm just going to give it a try. I had been rereading Anna Karenina at the time, and was about to reread The House of Mirth. So I thought-- Hey, maybe I should try to write something like that. I wrote THIS ONE IS MINE in about a year. I tried to get an agent after the fourth draft. I knew from TV that agents don't matter as much as the strength of the material. So I worked really hard to make it good before looking for an agent. My agent, Kassie Evashevski, was a friend of a friend. So I called her up and, lucky for me, she really dug it.

Can you see your book as a movie? Who would play the key roles?

I'm in my mid-forties, so when it comes to a heroine, I always think of Meg Ryan. But a big part of Violet is that she's let herself go. So I don't know what actress out there is brave enough to let herself look fat and disgusting. Of course, by fat and disgusting, I mean, wear a size 10 and not be completely disfigured by botox.

Have you been swept up in the Twilight phenomenon?

I'm waiting for my daughter to be old enough and read them with her. No doubt we'll both become complete addicts.

What's the last book you read?

WHEN WE WERE ROMANS by Matthew Kneale. Just so so fantastic. It's a real charmer, told from the point of view of an eight year old boy, about his trip across Europe with his mentally ill mother. It's funny and suspenseful and written in a voice you won't forget.

And what's next for you?

I'm working on my second novel. It's about two adult sisters who grew up in Aspen, Colorado. (Like I did.) One sister is a mother of twins and has lived the life that her prestigious family has passed down to her. The other sister is a screw-up who has rejected her family identity but has never found another one. It's similar to THIS ONE IS MINE in that it's detailed and funny and complex plot-wise. And it's also very much a novel of place, this one being the Rocky Mountains. I love writing novels more than anything and can't wait to devote all my time to this next book.

The Reader

I read The Reader when it was talked about on Oprah. When I was catching up on movie trailers today, this one came up. It stars Ralph Fiennes and the lovely Kate Winslet, it looks like a haunting, touching film. In other words, a must see. Below is a few tips for dealing with the holidays from Dr. Diana Kirschner. Why do I think of Bridget Jones's Diary when I think of single girls at holiday times?

Single at Holiday Time? The Ten-Step Recipe for Turning Holiday Stress into Joy
By Dr. Diana Kirschner

Author of Love in 90 Days: The Essential Guide to Finding Your Own True Love
Thanksgiving is coming fast. Christmas. Hanukkah. Are you doomed to a miserable holiday if your relatives drive you crazy? What if you are just introducing your family to a serious date, someone who could be the One? Does Aunt Millie always cluck about what a shame it is that you are single or how your kids need a dad? Even if your family is a battlefield, or you are super stressed-out you can turn any holiday one of the best holidays you've ever had. Simply use my ten-step dating advice "secret sauce" for singles and single mothers that have to deal with problem relatives at the traditional family gatherings. This recipe for creating holiday joy is based on clinical experience and research evidence. Feel free to add or subtract your own condiments!

Ten Steps to Holiday Joy:

1. Shock your troublesome 'bad egg' relatives into being cordial or even likeable. List three things, even small things, like hair color or crossword puzzle ability, you truly appreciate about them. Work these things into your conversation in an authentic way at the beginning of the family visit. This will tend to shock these 'bad eggs' into being 'good eggs.'

2. Use the therapist's secret. When you're facing a battleaxe relative, win by refusing to fight. Accept comments about your appearance, weight or singlehood that used to upset you with a nod and say "That's the way you see it." This really throws them and saves you from a lot of holiday stress.

3. Create a tradition of personal sharing & gratitude. Around the dinner table ask your family members to talk about their favorite memories of the holiday, especially the blessings and small miracles they experienced. Have them share what they are most thankful for on this special day. Research shows that the happiest people are the ones who regularly express gratitude for what they have.

4. Stop worrying about looking good. Maybe you've just broken up with someone whom your parents liked. You feel loser-like, vulnerable and lonely coming to the family dinner. You worry about how you are dressed, the extra pounds you've put on and various other assorted silly ideas. Realize that the way they see you doesn't really matter. Underneath whatever they say, they probably love you to pieces. So forget about looking good. Your real job is to have fun and enjoy yourself.

5. Neutralize joy-kill fighting among your kids. If you're a single mom, get all of your kids, even your youngest, into helping to prepare for the holiday. Have them set the table, decorate, slice and dice. This key piece of family relationship advice will engage the children's attention, give them something to be proud of and stop any fighting.

6. Set up a positive bond when a new boy/girlfriend comes to a holiday dinner with your family. Beforehand, tell both the family and your friend all the "good news" about each other. Introduce discussion topics both have interest in. If you are the newbie in the family, bring an incredibly thoughtful gift for the occasion, ask questions and listen a lot. Appreciate any and all good things about the meal, the house and the family members and remember to tell them what you enjoyed!

7. Give the gift of quality time. A massage, a long walk-and-talk, a romantic getaway or a family trip involve giving of yourself -- your time and attention, which is the most valuable gift of all. Remember that time is fleeting; so enjoy your family while you still can. Remember, everyone is "on loan" here. They won't be here forever.

8. Bring spirituality back into the holiday. Pray, meditate or simply spend time in nature alone or with your loved ones. This offers you 'peace on earth' that is much more fulfilling than unwrapping a hundred gifts. Make it a new family tradition but if there is resistance to the idea, let it go. Simply say, "I'll just be upstairs meditating/praying for about 15 minutes. See you soon." And say it with love. Be the change that you would like to see in your family.

9. Do three random acts of kindness every day during the holiday season. Research has shown that unselfish acts of giving where you expect nothing in return are super good for your own health and mood. And who doesn't want to have good spirits during the usually stressful holidays?

10. Set your intention for this holiday. This is the single most important thing you can do to ensure that you will cope successfully with holiday stress. You can make up your mind to have a happy holiday, no matter what your family relationships are like. Make a positive affirmation like, "This is the happiest Thanksgiving or Christmas I've ever had." Remember to use the present tense. Research has repeatedly shown the power of positive self-talk, which is what most of us call affirmations.

Positive affirmations have been shown to lower stress and cortisol levels. People cope more easily when going into new social situations and are less likely to make downward social comparisons when they practice self-affirmations. Participants in one study that said self-affirmations before a new social encounter reduced their thoughts about being rejected compared with another group that focused on the party and who would be there.
As it is in other life situations like work and career, setting your intention, is the most important step. This holiday you will probably be just as happy as you decide to be.

Love in 90 Days: The Essential Guide to Finding Your Own True Love.
Dr. Diana Kirschner

American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld

I never gave a whole lot of thought to Laura Bush until recently. I was reading an article- I think it was on Snopes.com, about how the secret service people really feel about the presidents and first ladies. There were very kind things said about Mrs. Bush, as opposed to lets say...some other first ladies, specifically one whose name rhymes with Bilary Dinton.

My mother recommended American Wife to me. So if I've told you to read American Bride, I meant American Wife.

I was very intrigued with this book, knowing the author loosely based American Wife (not bride) on the life of Laura Bush. After reading this book, I'm very interested in learning more about her. In fact, I just ordered Perfect Wife, a Laura Bush biography. I can't even imagine what it must be like to be a first lady. I'd like to think of the perks but there are huge downsides too.

American Wife tells the tale of Alice, a thirty-something librarian who is quite content with her close knit family and life as a single woman. At a party, Alice meets Charles Blackwell, member of the wealthy Blackwell family who couldn't be more opposite than the refined and witty Alice. They have a whirlwind courtship and become engaged after dating briefly. The book takes us into the depths of their marriage until Charles is president of the United States, decades after the two meet. I really enjoyed the first half of the book, the latter half wasn't as gripping for me- that's not to say it wasn't good, it was. Alice is a complex woman who is flawed, but smart and kind. Charles is rough around the edges, a good ol' boy who is down to earth and sincere about his politics.

Curtis Sittenfeld is definitely a talented author who spins a story that is a must read for anyone who is looking for a thick read about a relevant topic.

Coincidentally, Laura Bush is shopping around her memoir at this very moment. Here is a link to the full article. I know I'll want to read it!

Five Minutes with Maggie...and Willie Nelson

A Tale Out of Luck, by Willie Nelson

Yes, the Willie Nelson. When I first picked up the softcover book, I assumed that it was Willie Nelson's autobiography. The author's photo shows classic Willie - a rusty cowboy outfit, a wooden table with a bottle of whiskey and a deck of cards, and a horse idling in the background. Very country, very Willie Nelson. But then I read the description and was shocked to realize that it's not his autobiography! Willie Nelson wrote a novel!

The premise of the novel is a typical Western: there have been some murders and Indians might be involved. There's the war hero Hank Tomlinson, his son Jay Blue, and his sidekick Skeeter. Hank is the richest man in the town of Luck. In fact, he founded the town of Luck. But not without making some enemies along the way. When it appears that the mysterious murders could be pinned on Hank, Jay Blue and Skeeter take matters into their own hands and set off to prove Hank's innocence. They stumble into trouble each step of the way, but with the help of a reclusive mustanger, they pull through. The main story is criss-crossed with subplots that add to the confusion and drama and serve to propel the novel forward.

The book is a typical Western and the finale is predictable. However, the entertaining characters and fast-moving storyline make A Tale Out of Luck a quick but fun read. Willie Nelson fans will certainly enjoy the novel! Maggie Marton

Josie Bissett, The Tickle Monster

I have a couple of fantastic new kids books to write about but first is Josie Bissett's adorable book called The Tickle Monster. Complete with fluffy gloves, the silly story encourages fun interactive play between the parent and child as the book is read. With cute and colorful illustrations, the book is sure to be a huge hit with both parents and children.

Josie doesn't need any fancy introduction- we all know her from Melrose Place. Back in the day I dreamed about living in California, imagining myself living at my very own Melrose apartments. Well, I'm here now but not quite living on Melrose....I think that's a good thing!

The Tickle Monster is Josie's third book. She is all about parents and kids and being creative and spending quality time with your children. I love that! I was able to do a little interview with Josie and you can learn more about her books, projects and a variety of other things on her site.

Did you always want to be a writer?

I became interested in writing after I had my children. Having completed 7 years on Melrose Place and then giving birth five months later, I really began a new chapter in my life. I wanted to be home with my kids but still have a creative outlet. Writing allowed for that and I find it to be incredibly fulfilling.

Are there any creative similarities between acting and writing?

I don’t find too many similarities between the two. For me, writing is an extremely solitary creative process. When I write, I need to go to a hotel and not leave for a few days. It’s the only way I can accomplish anything. Acting is much more of a collaborative creative process.

What inspired each of your books? I’m guessing it had something to do with your children and becoming a mom…

Little Bits of Wisdom was inspired by the birth of my first child. I enrolled myself and my adorable little gassy newborn into all sorts of mommy and me groups in search for some “what do I do now?” conversations. I quickly realized the power of parents sharing advice and wisdom with other parents. “Little Bits of Wisdom” is a collection of tried and true parenting tips collected from real parents around the world.

I had so much fun reading and learning from the thousands of parents who wrote in with such valuable and heartfelt advice. In fact, my favorite tips were the ones in which parent’s shared meaningful traditions and rituals they experienced as a family. I was so eager to implement them into my family life that I decided to go at it again. I asked parents around the world to write to me and tell me “when was the last time you created a wonderful memory for your child-and how did you do it? “As Edgar Guest reminds us, “time with you is your child’s most cherished possession: and memories their greatest inheritance.”.

Tell me about the Tickle Monster! How did you come up with the idea for this silly monster?

The Tickle Monster is my first children’s book and was created by tickling my son one evening. The story just kinda flew out of my mouth. After putting him to sleep, I quickly wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget! That was 7 years ago! Yes, it has taken me a long time to complete this project! That’s what happens when you have kids!

How were you paired with the illustrator? I love illustrations from children’s books; they are like little works of art.

My publisher and I met with a number of Illustrators. It’s like any relationship. You know when it’s the right fit. I think he did a fantastic job! It was so much fun to watch this character that I had in my head and heart finally come to life!

What are the most valuable words of wisdom from your book, Little Bits of Wisdom? Do you ever watch Nanny 911 for tips? I try to gather some insight from that show and from books and other moms. Being a mother is tough!

Indeed! It’s the most challenging yet rewarding job out there! I can work 14 hours a day and not be tired but after a full day of mothering, I am asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.
As for some valuable words from my book, “Little Bits of Wisdom”, here are a few favorites!

“Listen to your children and marvel in the little things that catch their interest, like a train going by or a lizard on a tree. Have fun with your children, because they won’t remember the nagging you might do, but they will remember when mom and dad play in a homemade tent with them.!” ~Rachel VanDemark

“The best advice I have ever heard was Oprah Winfrey quoting Maya Angelou, who said that the thing she wished for most as child was for her parents eye’s to light up when she walked into the room. That simple statement changed the entire way I relate to my 15-month old twins. Now I always make sure that I look right at them and smile the moment I see them. ~Lynn Weber

And from “Making Memories”

“As a little girl, my dad was dedicated to making my life magical. He had a fun way to encourage me to read. The “Book Fairy” would often leave a new book under my pillow, and my Dad and I would spend time reading the book together. I was well on my way by the time I was 4! Dad, who traveled a lot on business, kept close to me by sending letters to me when he was away or even just at the office. Even though we all lived in the same house, it was very exciting for me to receive these letters, and I felt so important to be getting mail like a “grown-up.” ~Erin O’Sullivan-Smith

“When our children receive a stuffed animal or a doll as a gift, they name it after the person who gave it to them. Its great fun having the names of our relatives on the tips of the children’s tongues all the time-and of course they never forgot the thoughtful person who gave them that gift.”~Amy Wray

What have you read lately?

Unfortunately no novels for me lately. The stack of books that is currently on my night stand is:
The Family Virtues Guide by Linda Kavelin Popov
10 Conversations You Need To Have With Your Children by Shmuley Boteach
If the Buddha Dated and If the Buddha Married by Charlotte Kasl
Psychological Commentaries by G.I. Gurdijeff
Newsweek

What do you like to do in your spare time, hobbies-interests etc?

I really have very little spare time. If I do, I like to spend it with friends and family. If I have any after that, I’d read or learn more about my camera.

Because I also run a beauty blog (www.hellodollface.com) I have to ask about all your favorite beauty products and cosmetics. What are all your favorites, what do you use every day? Are you a cosmetics junkie like I am?

Yes! I am a big time product junkie! I love it all! Some of my favs are:

Smashbox Cosmetics
Murad Resurgence Mask and Vitamin C mask
Murad Resurgence skin care line (I am a spokesperson for Murad and stand behind it 100%)
Love the Murad Lip Gloss spf 15
Homebody in LA (amazing oils)
You Rebel by Benefit (tinted moisturizer)
Murad Body Firming Bronzer

I just found out that you are on a television show, tell me about that. And you work with Molly Ringwald- were you a fan of Sixteen Candles as a teen?

I am currently recurring on ABC Family’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”. The show was created by 7th Heaven’s Brenda Hampton. It is a teen and family drama that focuses on real teen issues and the relationships between families and friends. I play a Christian mom (Kathleen Bowman) of the school cheerleader (Grace Bowman, played by Megan Park).
And yes, I loved Sixteen Candles as a teen! Who didn’t?! Molly is great! Our characters rarely cross paths but I really love her work on the show.

So what else is next for you? Where do you see yourself in five years from now?

I am currently working on another children’s book and a relationship book.
Where do I see myself in five years? I really don’t know! I need to think about that question in my spare time! Right now, I am taking life one day at a time.

One Fifth Avenue

I tried reading a Candace Bushnell book a few years ago and didn't love it. I sort of wrote her off as a Danielle Steel type. You know, same story line recycled over and over again, beautiful poor girl falls for forbidden handsome rich boy blah blah.... But then for some reason, I decided to give One Fifth Avenue a whirl and lo and behold, I loved it. I couldn't put it down and was sort of sad when it ended. I just ordered Lipstick Jungle and now have high expectations. Well, it must be good enough to make a TV show out of. Although I think its been canceled.

This book is about a group of people who live- or want to live- at the exquisite One Fifth Avenue.

It's New York Society, appearances, money lust, greed, friendship and love all tied up in a novel. Intersecting story lines come together for a satisfying ending. This I can see as a TV show or film. I wish I was a producer who had the power to put these projects together. Until then, pick it up at Amazon.com or where ever you get your books.

Twilight makeup artist, Jeanne VanPhue

I know you are practically peeing in your pants over the major movie release of Twilight. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. What a fantastic treasure trove of facts and details about history, science and much more. Know It All, The Little Book of Essential Knowledge by Susan Aldridge, Elizabeth King Humphrey and Julie Whitaker is written in simple terms, clear enough for both kids and adults. At the end of each section is a quiz you can take to see how much you've learned. I have a terrible short term memory so I didn't do so well. Then again, it was late and I was tired.

I didn't feel like starting up a new novel last night so I cracked open this book and stayed up later than I should have. Growing up, I didn't have an interest in the things I was taught in school. I daydreamed, passed notes, and watched the clock tick-tock until the bell set me free. Now I wish I paid more attention because I want to know things about the world. I want to play Jeopardy and shout out the answers with confidence instead of mumbling into my hand, then proclaiming, Did you hear me? I knew it! I'm hopeless at math but think there's potential to learn in the other subjects.

Know it All gives me the information I missed. Chapter One focuses on Understanding the Universe, Chapter Two: the Story of the Earth, Chapter Three: The Story of Life, Chapter Four: Exploring The World, Chapter Five: Invention and Discovery, Chapter Six: Conflicts of the Modern Age, Chapter Seven: The Structure of Society, Chapter Eight: Religion and Thought, Chapter Nine: Artistic Endeavor, Chapter Ten includes quizzes of all the chapters.

Here is amazon link for this fantastic book. You will enjoy having this book close at hand. Here's what Sarah says about it: "It's about a young woman named Jackie, who has bailed out of New York. She comes to D.C. out of convenience, because she has some college buddies who work on the Hill. She has no options left, so she comes to D.C. and crashes in [a] friend's apartment, and that's where the story begins."

For the whole article about the show, click here. And here is an interview I did with Jessica a while back. I wonder what else she's up to these days, post Washingtonienne scandal?

Angels and Demons movie trailer

There was so much hype centered around The Da Vinci Code that I was actually turned off from reading the book and seeing the movie. Angels and Demons is the first book in the Robert Langdon series and with the success of The Da Vinci Code, naturally it was only a matter of time before Angels and Demons was turned into a film.

I don't know if I am going to see it. I never read these books to my kids although I admit I've been intrigued. According to Monsters and Critics and other online news sources, the Jonas Brothers will star in the film version of this kids book.

The three brothers - Kevin, 20, Joe, 19, and Nick, 16 - will play musicians whose parents take care of the dog shortly before the pet's owner, their aunt, dies.
The stars' younger brother Frankie, eight, will also appear in the film. Frankie's character and Walter the dog will join forces to rescue an expensive Koi fish and stop jewel thieves. Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen are writing the screenplay, with Peter and Bobby Farrelly rumoured to be directing.

I suppose the Farrelly's are the idea directors for this humorous, if raunchy, kids tale. I admit to pre-judging books when I know nothing about them. I figured this would be southern fiction about hair. I don’t have an explanation of why I thought this.

That’s why upon beginning the book, I was like, “What is this? Its not southern fiction! Its not about hair!” Once I got into the groove of the story, I couldn’t put it down! Elise Chidley reminds me a little bit of one of my favorite authors, Marian Keyes. She’s British born and has that fantastic humor that I love.

Your Roots Are Showing is funny, warm, witty and there are some twists and turns that you don’t see coming. I thought the book was headed in one direction and surprise! The author pulled a trick out of her hat.

The basics-Lizzie, the mother of two small twins is exhausted, tired, worn out. In a fit of frustration she sends an email to her sister about how she wishes her husband would go on an extended business trip etc etc and OOPS! The email ends up in her husband's IN box. He’s not understanding, in fact he’s quite hurt and upset. I remember sending emails to my friends complaining about my husband and when he would use my computer, I prayed that he didn’t scroll through my sent mail. Then I stopped complaining about him, period. Never put anything in writing!

Lizzie has to learn how to be on her own, depend on herself and find a strength that she didn’t even know she had. It’s a great debut novel and like all good books, it was a sad moment when I finished. I can envision this as a Lifetime movie which would be fun and relatable to all of us mothers.

Books to inspire and accept

I vacillate between self acceptance- who cares what I weigh? I’m going to eat a croissant for Pete’s sake- damn the calories!- and disgust- my thighs are lumpier than mashed potatoes- Im getting older and can’t eat what I want so I'll live on apples- and am left feeling like a pinball in a game of Weight Watchers Wizard.

This is the story of my life. I first read Valerie Frankel’s humorous book, Thin Is The New Happy, hoping to shed some light on the feelings that most women experience on and off throughout in their lives. Cringe-worthy feelings while I glare in the mirror and realize that gasp! I have the body of a woman in her late thirties that has birthed two babies and has not ever worked out with a personal trainer. I love Valerie’s easy writing style and appreciate how she completely lays it all out there, her struggles with dieting and gaining and losing weight. Thanks for making me feel so not alone, Valerie. Lets unbutton our pants and breathe freely together.

On the flip side, The Non-Runners Marathon Guide for Women was obtained with the hopes that I would be inspired to break out some spandex and become a running sensation, one with firm thighs and the lung capacity of a gold medal athlete. It didn’t happen. I lack the stamina and drive to run, at one time, twenty six miles. I can jog for a few minutes, downhill is best. Then my knee starts to hurt and I feel like my innards are bouncing around too much and I get hungry. I end up walking home and drinking coffee while eating a Zone bar, congrataling myself on a good three minute jog. Hey, thats a couple of minutes that could have been spent sitting in front of the tv eating Nutella out of the jar with a knife.

Dawn Dais is a terrific writer and if you are serious about marathon running, I highly suggest you give her book a whirl. Like Valerie, Dawn is straight up and honest, funny and I liked reading the book even if I didn't end up registering for a marathon.

At the end of the day, I walk, I ride my bike, I do yoga and I indulge in that croissant and I feel guilty and bloated. Just like a typical woman.

Secret Life of Bees

The book was probably one of the best I've ever read. There are a handful of books that really stand out over the years-The Glass Castle, Kite Runner, to name a couple off the top of my head.

I'm thrilled that The Secret Life of Bees was turned into a movie, a movie that does the book justice. Sometimes you see a movie after reading the book and it's such a let down. Not with The Secret Life of Bees. Dakota Fanning does a fabulous job as fourteen year old Lily, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo round out the female stars. Paul Bettany plays Lily's father- never did I expect a Brit to pull off a southern accent so convincingly. I guess that's what it means to act, right?

I hope the academy considers this movie when nominating for a screenplay adaptation, lead actress (Fanning) and supporting actresses (Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo). I'm all about the Academy Awards honoring outstanding females. The movie made me cry but in the end, I was filled with hope. The scenery is beautiful too. A must-see.

Marley and Me, movie trailer

I just saw the movie trailer for Marley and Me. But from the book drop box, they heard a small scratching sound and feared an animal was trapped in the book drop. Carefully opening the metal box, they peered in and were astonished to discover a tiny orange kitten huddled among the books. Upon examination, the kitten had frost-bitten feet but was otherwise pretty healthy, considering his ordeal. The head library (and author of the book), Vicki Myron, decided to approach the library's board of directors and ask for the kitten to be officially adopted by the public library. Though it wasn't an easy decision - many people were worried about the health and safety aspects - the board agreed. The kitten was named Dewey, for the Dewey Decimal System.

The book is really about much more than the cat, though. It takes place in a very small farming community in Iowa during the 1980s, when the town was hit hard by the down economy. Jobs were lost when factories were shut down, and farms became commercialized, putting many family farmers out of business. The small-town library played a central role during the economic crisis. They stocked materials to aid the unemployed in finding new employment and even installed the very first computer to assist with resumes and job searches. It was a tough time in Spencer, and as stressed mothers brought their kids in to the library or unemployed fathers used the computer's search database, Dewey was there, climbing on the patron's laps, rubbing against their legs, and providing the library' visitors with some much-needed affection.

And there's another layer to the tale, as well, and that's Vicki's own story. As a young wife and mother, Vicki left her alcoholic husband to protect herself and her young daughter. After a stint on welfare, Vicki decided to go to school and ended up earning her Master's degree. Dewey enters Vicki's life as more than simply the library cat. Suffering from numerous medical problems, including a bout with cancer, Vicki begins to see Dewey as more than her pet, but also as a strong source of comfort.

As anyone who has loved a dog or cat can attest, that relationship is always strong and fulfilling for both the person and the pet. This is a very heartwarming tale of Dewey, who was more than just a pet cat. His story reached news sources all over the world, and he even appeared in two separate documentaries. The writing style is often oversimplified - structured as though the librarian is telling Dewey's story to the children at the library's story hour - which causes sections to move a little slowly. However, the emotional texture and the historical context make this book an enjoyable, light read. --Maggie Marton

Jancee Dunn- Don't You Forget About Me

I really enjoyed Jancee Dunn's first book so it was with eager anticipation that I waited for her debut novel. I had high expectations for this book. Why? Because we are both from New Jersey, her first book was funny and I just knew based on the title of this one, that I'd love it. Love it. And I did. I picked the book up on Friday and by last night I was done.

Lillian Curtis is a thirty eight year old television producer who's husband has just announced he's done with the marriage. Lillian heads back to her parents house in suburban NJ to convalesce.
Everything in her childhood room is exactly as she's left it- which is where the descriptions get fun. Jancee is a child of the 80's and her observations and memories are spot on from the scrunchy socks to taping songs off the radio to cassette tapes to the posters on the wall. Coinciding with Lillian's trip back home is her 20th high school reunion and the possibility of reuniting with her old boyfriend. Old feelings and memories come flooding back to her as she reassess the person she was- and still is.

Jancee writes with a light touch- her descriptions are hilarious, the pages turn quickly and the story has plenty of endearing characters to bond with, especially Vi, the seventy-something year old television personality. At the end of the book, I sighed and thought, Gee...I wish had written this!

Great job Jancee. Now hurry up and write another one!

ART

When I was a little girl, I used to go to the library and check out enormous art books about Monet, VanGogh, Matisse, Picasso and many more. I was interested in everything from Impressionists to Pop Art and all the artists in between. There was a time when I could easily identify all the famous painters and their masterpieces. I have always relished in visiting museums, learning about art and painting. My two loves have been art and writing and I have never strayed from these interests. If only my guidance counselor hadn't talked me out of going to art school...but that's another story.

This amazing book, simply titled ART is one of the best art books I've ever looked at. ART features over 2,500 works of art from cave drawings to present day. My fingers were trembling as I opened this fabulous and thorough book which includes information presented in a very exciting and fun way. My kids were even excited to read about their favorite artists- Picasso, Van Gogh and Andy Warhol to name a few.

I cannot wait to sit down and go page by page, taking in all the engaging facts and details about the artwork featured. Color theory, concepts, imagery and more is what you will discover in ART. I am so impressed with this book which is suitable for kids and adults. It will remain a treasured item in my house and I will refer to it forever. I'm so inspired by ART. I need an easel and new paints, maybe Santa will bring this to me for Christmas.

As a little girl, I did something terrible- I ripped out pages of the paintings I loved in those library books. Now I will never have to do that again, I have all my beloved pieces of artwork in one enormous and comprehensive book. Click here for more information.

Reel Moments

I was in Hollywood this week for Glamour magazine's Reel Moments. It was very surreal, exciting and fun. It's a quick read and you can't help but ask yourself what you would do in the same situation.

Twilight, the soundtrack

By now, I'm sure you have read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer plus the three other novels about Edward and Bella. Maybe you too have been sucked into the vampire vortex and you spend nights dreaming of an Edward of your own. A cool, rock solid, sexy vampire who is stuck at seventen years old even though he will live forever.

For fans of the books, here is the official movie soundtrack. The film will bust into theaters in November and I have a feeling theaters will be cluttered with swooning women of all ages. So get your fix of music now. I've been waiting for this film since I read the book so long ago. If you arent familiar with The Secret Life of Bees, you must run and I do mean RUN to the nearest bookstore or library and get yourself a copy. The movie opens on October 17th so you have almost 2 weeks to read it.

Yesterday I watched Oprah because she hosted the cast. You know how interested I am in turning good books into good movies. And this book had a subject, setting and time period which will translate very well onto the big screen.

I never realized how stunning Alicia Keys was until I saw her on Oprah! The entire cast is gorgeous and so talented. Below is a clip of Alicia talking about the film.

The Devil, The Lovers, and Me by Kimberlee Auerbach

I picked this book up and didn't close it until I was completely finished. It was so amusing and interesting. Fed up with her life and her boyfriend who refuses to "pop the question" Kimmi sought answers from a wise but chic tarot card reader named Iris. Through her readings, Kimmi was able to make tough decisions and see her life in a different light. She gained understanding of different events and looked at the past with a different perspective.

Kimberlee is hilarious and things she writes in her book will have you laughing out loud. That's LOL to those who like to abbreviate. You have to love a girl who names her blog Kimmiland. Take a peek and watch her videos. Boy, does Kimmi love to laugh! She is full of happiness and life. If a book, a blog and her one woman show isn't enough, you can also join Kimmi here.

Here is the Amazon link and a blurb of the book:
During a dark period of her life, when she felt stuck in her job after seven years, and stymied in a relationship with a loving man who still wouldn't pop the question, the author, at 33, visited a clairvoyant in order to find out what the future held for her. Iris was not a typical tarot reader, but heavily into Kabbalah, and she navigated for Auerbach a reading of the 22 Major Arcana.

How much belief do you have in tarot cards?
I don't think of them as a tool for divination. I like to use them as a lens with which to see your life in a different way.

Do you believe our lives are mapped out for us or can we veer off course and change our lives at any time?
I believe we all have free will and can change our lives and outlook in any moment. I also believe that we live in a chaotic, crazy, fucked up, but beautiful world where we have little control, so as much as we have choice and can contribute to creating a particular reality, we also have to go with the flow, roll with the punches and make the best out of the shit that happens.

What do you think about the idea of having a "soul mate"?
I think a "soul mate" is anyone who touches your soul, be it sexual, romantic, platonic, or all of the above. Different people touch different parts of our souls. And thank God for that.

What made you write this book?
I wanted to tell this story in a big way and help other people, women in particular, feel better about their own unique journeys.

Do you have any hobbies?...what are they?
Pole-dancing, Flamenco dancing, taking pictures, fucking around in Photoshop, cooking. And I love, love, love going to the Sacred Center of New York.

What's the last book you read?
A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle--it kicked my ass in the best possible way.

Name your favorite five films that you could watch over and over again.
When Harry Met Sally, Out of Africa, Defending Your Life, Terms of Endearment, The Goodbye Girl.

Do you think you might write another book? I love your humor!
Thanks, and yes, I want to write another book. Perhaps self help next. And a few screenplays, for sure.
